Another Conservative comes out for Obama

Wick Allison, Editor in Chief of D Magazine in Dallas-Fort Worth, is another true and established Conservative to realize that Obama is the best hope for this country... and the most likely to preserve HIS values. In an article entitled A Conservative For Obama, Allison states that "Barack Obama strikes a chord with me like no political figure since Ronald Reagan." Now there's an interesting observation.

Here is a quote:

Barack Obama is not my ideal candidate for president. (In fact, I made the maximum donation to John McCain during the primaries, when there was still hope he might come to his senses.) But I now see that Obama is almost the ideal candidate for this moment in American history. I disagree with him on many issues. But those don't matter as much as what Obama offers, which is a deeply conservative view of the world. Nobody can read Obama's books (which, it is worth noting, he wrote himself) or listen to him speak without realizing that this is a thoughtful, pragmatic, and prudent man. It gives me comfort just to think that after eight years of George W. Bush we will have a president who has actually read the Federalist Papers.

Most important, Obama will be a realist. I doubt he will taunt Russia, as McCain has, at the very moment when our national interest requires it as an ally. The crucial distinction in my mind is that, unlike John McCain, I am convinced he will not impulsively take us into another war unless American national interests are directly threatened.

This comes after Chris Buckley's similar announcement (and it should be pointed out that Allison was formerly the publisher of William F. Buckley's National Review)leading one to the conclusion that traditional Conservatives are turned off by McCain's antics, which are not typical of traditional conservatism.

With a little over 3 weeks until the election, the appearance of more intellectual conservatives seeing Obama as the most reasonable candidate, and with the lead in the polls growing in Obama's direction, I am optimistic that this is going to be a marked victory for the Democratic candidate.

Re: Another Conservative comes out for Obama (2.00 / 1)

I read this article a couple of days ago and sent it to a few people who call themselves conservatives, it will be interesting to hear their reactions at work tomorrow.
What I found particularly enlightening was the comments that followed.

I have no doubt you will be labelled many things for your endorsement of Obama, but thoughtful and rational are two labels that will not be besmirched. The apparently ineluctable movement of the Republicn Party toward rigid dogma has been disheartening, particularly when the dogma doesn't work. You have provided a dispassionate perspective that cuts through the spin and the posturing inherent in our recent presidential campaigns.

Somebody was finally able to put into words why every intelligent conservative Republican can find very little to agree with when it comes to McCain/Bush and why Barack Obama makes so much more sense.  I am a moderate Republican from Kansas, my entire family is Republican, and we recognize nothing Republican in McCain. Obama's our man.

I am a former communications director for the Massachusetts Republican Party and chief speechwriter to former Governor Paul Cellucci... I have been alarmed at the irrationality of our party...The founders hoped to create a system that would be deliberative in nature, screening out the lock-step, rote ideological thinking that seems to dominate the GOP today ...Unlike any public figure I have seen in a long time, Obama does justice to his opponents arguments... I believe his desire for bi-partisanship is genuine, and I am glad that you agree.

Re: Another Conservative comes out for Obama (none / 0)

This has been out awhile. I think I read it a few weeks ago.

Here's Andrew Sullivan's post on it in mid-Sept:

Still, it's a good read and it's got the Wingnuts in a twist, as evidenced by this Moonie Times piece from Oct. 1:

I find its a common theme among Objective conservatives/republicans is that Obama has "first class intellect first class temperment"

from Buckley Jr to Charles Kraughthammer
and McCain Killed Modern conservatism during that last debate with that housing bailout ..

I was watching fox news sunday and he even lost Bill Kristol

President-elect Barack Obama spent the day thanking the people who helped him win the election. Obama's first phone call was to Sarah Palin.
